Continued strong growth in parcels supported a more than 5% increase in total revenue for PostNL in 2021.

E-commerce services accounted for more than three fifths of the post’s revenue as the pandemic continued to accelerate online shopping adoption across the Netherlands. To meet sector demand, PostNL opened two new parcel sorting centres in 2021, including one dedicated to small items, as well as increasing its parcel locker network by close to 50%. By 2024, it aims to have 1,500 locker terminals nationwide.

Mailings related to COVID-19, such as vaccination invitations, as well as election mailings, helped offset the ongoing e-substitution trend in mail volumes. A recovery in direct mail volumes also helped the post to achieve stable mail volumes between 2020 and 2021. However, in 2022 the post expects that strong volume declines will return, with volumes forecast to fall 8-10%. For more details download the latest IPC Carrier Intelligence Report for PostNL.
